Francisco Rodríguez is a Chilean painter based in London whose work examines the political and emotional undercurrents of contemporary life through a distinctly Latin American lens. Born in 1989, the year following the plebiscite that ended the Pinochet regime, Rodríguez came of age in the long shadow of Chile's transition — a formative context that continues to shape his practice.
His new series extends these political concerns into a darker, more contemporary register. Figures turn to analog devices as if reaching for a portal of escape from the relentlessness of digital media cycles, grappling with the paradox that the tools meant to connect us often leave us more isolated and divided. Rodríguez gravitates toward adolescence as a subject for its openness and emotional volatility — qualities that mirror the broader uncertainty of the present moment. Recurring motifs of haunting wild dogs and drifting figures move through liminal domestic scenes, less as protagonists than as embodiments of a collective subconscious.
These concerns find form in a visual language that draws on Japanese Edo-period printmaking, Chinese handscroll traditions, and Flemish Renaissance painting — inheritances that inform his flattened compositions and muted palette: layers of cool blue and cream punctuated by bursts of primary red and orange, evoking pastoral or dreamlike atmospheres that hold the political and the personal in quiet tension.
Francisco Rodríguez (b. 1989, Santiago, Chile) lives and works in London. He studied BFA Painting at Universidad de Chile, Santiago and graduated with an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Arts in 2018.
