Codici di geometrie esistenziali is an edition of screenprinted collages realised at the studio of Italian London based artist Ludovica Gioscia. The edition consists of 20 unique collages created by meticulously gluing fragments of the artist’s custom screenprinted wallpapers onto gesso plywood panels.
These wallpapers have been a trademark material in the artist’s practice since 2003. They feature in many of her architectural scale site-specific installations - the Giant Decollages. These are created by layering commercial and hand printed wallpapers that are then ripped to reveal the strata beneath. Discarded fragments of the wallpapers that are used when installing these Giant Decollages are collected in transparent boxes and stored at the artist’s studio.
These boxes are treasure troves that are activated in this new edition, yielding palettes of pattern fragments and colour combinations stemming back to 2006. In the edition, these acquire another layer of print - a screenprinted portrait of the beloved cat Arturo with whom she lives and collaborates.
In addition, a new wallpaper created especially for this edition and screenprinted in three different colours covers roughly half of each collage. It portrays Arturo and Ludovica lying in bed next to each other, holding paws and dreaming together. As they fall asleep, the artist receives telepathic signals from Arturo, which feel like swirling clusters of flashing colours. The edition is evocative of these colourful, joyful exchanges.
Ludovica Gioscia (born 1977, Rome) lives and works in London. Gioscia has presented large site specific installations internationally including the Miro’ Foundation in Barcelona, MACRO and the American Academy in Rome, the Warhol in Pittsburgh, Palazzo da Mosto in Reggio Emilia, Maraya Art Park in Sharjah, MNAC in Bucharest, South London Gallery and Jerwood in London.
