Exhibition Dates:  June 6 - July 5, 2026

ARTRO is pleased to present Ai Makita's solo exhibition "First Shadows, Then Reflections, Then the Things Themselves" from June 6 to July 5, 2026.

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 6, 2025, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. The artist will be in attendance.

The title of this exhibition, "First Shadows, Then Reflections, Then the Things Themselves," draws inspiration from Plateau's "Allegory of the Cave," while simultaneously juxtaposing the physical phenomena in her own creative process with my perception of the world. The "shadows" cast by three-dimensional works, the "reflections" of light emitted by mirror-like layers of painting, and the "things themselves" that emerge as a single entity. She has woven together a collection of works that move between two and three dimensions, organic and inorganic, into a single phenomenon within the historic space of a Meiji-era storehouse in Kyoto.
